I originally planned to go to Portugal with Anaiz, and as we talked about it we turned it into a roommate trip. It ended up that we were 7: Me, Anaiz, Hugo, Cynthia, Esteban, Pau, and Flor (Esteban's friend). Our flight was at 8am, so it was an early morning. We arrived in Lisbon at 8.50 (there is a 1hr time difference). We decided to take a bus to the city center to find our hostel, even though i opted for the taxi. the bus was crowded and there was a little confrontation with a ghetto white guy and a bunch of older women. the screaming lasted about 10 minutes and was an interesting start to Portugal. We arrived in an main square near our hostel and bought a sightseeing bus tour. then we walked to our hostel to check in. The hostel was amazing. it was pretty small, and family run. over the 2 days we were there, they knew our names, and it was a very clean and friendly atmosphere. we had a room with 3 bunkbeds, and they added an extra bed so all 7 of us were together. we relaxed for a few minutes. paid for the hostel and then went out to find food. we found a nearby little restaurant were we ate at the bar, without seats ...

Airlie Beach is a very popular backpacker town on the beach with a 3-4 block main strip full of touristy shops, cute cafes and, of course, bars. After another day full of grilled cheese, PB&Js and toast with butter and jam... we were VERY ready for a trip on The Whitsundays Islands with REAL food! On Wednesday, September 17, we disembarked from the marina in Airlie for our 3 day/2 night sailing adventure around the beautiful Whitsunday Islands. We booked this sailing trip along with our 4WD Fraser Island adventure when we were back in Cairns (traveler's tip: it's WAY more economical to book these 2 trips together!). The sailing boat we chose to sail around the islands on was an 83ft Maxi ocean racing yacht named Boomerang. Boomerang (once called Ondine VII) won 1st place in the World Maxi Series race and also races in the US, Japan and NZ up until it was retired in 2001. Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Parker joined the US Marine Corps on July 22, 1968 just after graduation from high school. He attended boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, and after additional training in North Carolina and California, Parker was assigned to Danang Air Base in Vietnam. His first assignment in Danang was as a baker, and then later he was assigned to the mailroom on the base. In addition to the seven day a week job in the mail room, he also went out on patrols, or as extra help with reconnaissance at night as a machine gunner. He was discharged in February of 1970, and returned home to West Hartford, CT, where he worked as a firefighter for 24 years in West Hartford, and in Hartford for seven. He joined the VFW in West Hartford shortly after returning from Vietnam.

I was starting to get nervous, so I kept my mind off the absence of my ride by watching the various people that came and went from the tourist shop. about 15 minutes before the bus finally showed, a white land cruiser pulled up and parked in the bus lane. at first I thought this was odd, and then just plain selfish, but when I looked again at the SUV I realized it had been extended! Interview conducted by Eileen Hurst. Busha enlisted in the US Marine Corps on September 1, 1943. He chose the Marine Corps because of its reputation for "being the best", according to Busha. After basic training on Parris Island (SC), Busha went on to be a rifle instructor for incoming recruits at the camp. After 6 months of instructor duty, he was transferred to Camp Lejeune and Camp Pendleton for additional training. In April of 1945, he was shipped to Okinawa where he fought on the front lines in the "Battle of Okinawa", the bloodiest battle in Pacific during World War II. Busha describes in detail what the Marines endured on the front lines in Okinawa. After Okinawa, his platoon was sent to Guam to prepare for an invasion of Japan, however the bomb was dropped on Nagasaki before he was sent in. Busha finished out his time in the Marine Corps as part of a brig detachment in Tsingtao, China. He was sent home in the spring of 1946. On the train ride to Maryland, where he was to be discharged, his car derailed and killed or injured many of the marines aboard the train. He returned to New York for a time, but eventually moved to Connecticut where he worked at Bristol Brass for many years, becoming a member and leader in the United Auto Workers Union. He was later named Deputy Labor Commissioner in Connecticut because of his work with the union. He still keeps in touch with members of his squad through reunions and the division newsletter.
